A Family-friendly, Living, Breathing Railway Museum....
Our original and restored station buildings tell the story of railways and the everyday lives of people in East Anglia from the 1840s through to the 21st Century. We have a comprehensive collection of railway architecture and historic locomotives as well as many first-hand accounts of people who worked on the railways.
The Waiting and Ladies Waiting Rooms, Station Master’s Office and Clearing House have been recreated into atmospheric ‘room sets’ and our corridor train carriages evoke fond memories of childhood train travel of years gone by. The working signal boxes providing hands on, interactive visitor experiences and other museum highlights include the Victorian Goods Shed and a fully functioning Restoration Shed, where you can see behind the scenes at our locomotive restoration programme. This includes our beautiful N7 locomotive, the only one left in the world, which is now on static display at the museum.
2017 will be an exciting year which includes the extension of our Miniature Railway and continuing work on the relocation of our restoration shed, a massive project! We’ll see the return of old favourites such as the Chappel Beer Festivals and Thomas the Tank Engine, a Transport Extravaganza showcasing a range of classic vehicles, a 1940s Tea Dance, a Summer Steam Gala, when all three of our historic locomotives will be in steam, and a series of other railway-themed events throughout the year.
We are open seven days a week, 10:00 – 16:30, 363 days of the year.
